Concrete, Aggregate & Sand for DIY work
Before even thinking about using these products yourself, think first about health & safety of you and your team and the general public. Please refer to the Health & Safety page once you have read this.
Some obvious points to think about
- Delivery trucks are large and you will need to check access: width, height and turning circle. Most trucks will require 3 - 3.5 m width to gain access. Also check for overhead cables and trees.
- Parked cars - do you need to advise your neighbours to keep an area free?
- Delivery instructions must be clear and you will need to have a responsible person available to take and sign for delivery. A contact no. is essential.
- Notice for delivery and payment: We will require payment in advance of delivery. Cheques will need to be cashed and processed in advance, so credit or debit cards over the phone are quicker. We do not collect cash or offer COD.
- Tipping in the road: Some local authorities will not permit this so please check the local rules before you go ahead.
- Tipping area: You will be best advised to prepare an area for materials to be tipped/discharged. A full 20 tonne load of aggregate will make a considerable heap of around 12m3 (i.e. a cone of 5 metres diameter and nearly 2 metres high). A full load of concrete 6m3 is equal to approximately 150 barrow loads.
- Concrete should not be laid in heavy rain or freezing conditions. When laid in suitable weather, the concrete must be allowed to "cure". This means covering it for around 7 days with polythene or tarpaulin to prevent it drying too quickly and losing strength or cracking.
- 30 mins is the standard time for delivery so allow for plenty of labour to be available on the day of delivery. If the delivery takes longer than 30 mins, an additional charge will be made.
- Vehicles off road: Please be aware that we will only drive off road where access is safe and clear at the customer's risk. If you are intending to cross a local authority footpath, any damage will be your responsibility so you may want to protect the footpath with heavy boards or a steel plate. Also be aware that delivery trucks are heavy and may damage or break drainage pipes, manhole covers or drive surfaces.
