Buying Aggregates for the first time?

The following provides answers to FAQ such as:

  1. Health and Safety Advice?
  2. Where is the best supplier?
  3. What type do I need and how do I place it?
  4. How heavy is it?
  5. How much do I need and how do I measure for it?
  6. How much can be delivered in a load and can the truck get to my job site?
  7. Do you supply aggregates in bags?
  8. How can I be sure I am paying for good quality materials?
  9. Where can I get good advice?
  10. How do I place an order and pay for it?

1. Health and Safety Advice

If you are handling aggregate and placing it yourself, you should take careful note of the advice on our Health and Safety webpage. Always wear safety footwear but basically our aggregates are natural products that do not contain hazardous materials (unless dust is breathed in in large quantities) but you may need to wear a face mask if shovelling fine materials in dry conditions to prevent breathing in fine silica particles.

2. Where is the best supplier?

It is usually best to buy aggregate from a supplier close by to your site since transport costs of heavy materials are expensive and generally the closest supplier should have the lowest delivered cost. See our location map and delivery area to find the closest J Clubb source.

3. What type do I need and how do I place it?

There are many grades of aggregates available and they can be used for a multitude of applications from constructing and surfacing driveways, drainage, site mixed concrete, golf bunkers and equestrian use. We would recommend that you contact our friendly and helpful sales office for good advice on selection of the right product and how to use it.

4. How heavy is it?

Aggregate is sold by the metric tonne and the weight of a cubic metre of aggregate varies according to its density. Most aggregates will weigh between 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre and 2 tonnes per cubic metre. A cubic metre of aggregates will fill approximately 30 standard wheel barrows. A full 20 tonne lorry load will fill 420 wheel barrows!!!

5. How much do I need?

Use our simple calculator to establish the amount that you want but it assumes that the hole is exactly square and level, so you may want to take this into account to estimate how much to order. It is usual to allow up to 5% additional for variations of this type.

6. How much is delivered in a load and can the truck get to my jobsite?

We can deliver any quantity from 5 tonnes upwards and a standard truck will be fully loaded with 20 tonnes. We also have trucks that have a lift axle to enable them to access more difficult sites. These carry 15 tonnes. Advice on access is best discussed with our sales office.

7. Do you supply aggregates in bags?

Yes, we can supply a large range of standard and decorative bagged aggregates in 25kg, 40kg or 1 tonne bags and our joint venture company Hye Oak Ltd can be found through their website where their range and services are fully explained.

8. How can I be sure that I am paying for good materials?

The quality of concrete is assured if you purchase from an accredited supplier. We are accredited by BSI and quality is assured. We are the only BSI accredited company in our area. NOT ALL SUPPLIERS ARE QUALITY ASSURED.

9. Where can I get good advice?

Contact the J Clubb Sales team by email or telephone. For independent advice, contact the Quarry Products Association.

10. How do I place an order and pay for it?

Our sales team will give you a free estimate and quotation service that can be confirmed in writing. All materials supplied must be paid for before delivery either by opening a valid credit card account (for repeat purchases, subject to status) or by credit/debit card over the telephone. All major cards are accepted. For prices and/or advice, contact Sales by email or telephone.
